Improving Health Outcomes in Low Income Countries: Addressing Challenges in the Management of Paediatric Intussusception in a Resource Deprived Setting.

Summary:

Intussusception is a leading course of intestinal obstruction in the paediatric population and its management can be challenging especially in centres with inadequate resources where this problem becomes even more daunting. We reviewed 19 cases of intussusception in the paediatric age group, which were managed by medical officers in a resource poor facility in a deprived part of Ghana. We reviewed outcomes of cases treated by open surgery, and that of case managed by pneumatic reduction. We highlight the use of an improvised set up aimed at achieving pneumatic reduction thereby minimising operative rates.
