Twenty years ago Dr. Joseph Korpisah met Dr Paul Rompa in the St Anthony Hospital in Dzodze Ghana (Volta Region). Dr Korpisah was not yet specialized and started to help Dr Rompa with orthopedic operations. This startled his interest in orthopedic surgery for which he continued his training at the University Hospital of Korle Bu in Accra Ghana. A few years ago he has resettled in Dzodze as an orthopedic surgeon – Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons.
The presence of Joseph Korpisa attracts all kinds of different orthopedic patients with congenital and acquired problems, new and non-healed trauma patients, young and old. Nowadays there is chronic shortage in hospitalization capacity and for this reason a new orthopedic ward and new operation theatre are under construction. The St Anthony hospital is part of a larger network of hospitals in Ghana that participate in the TREK program. In this program, villages in Ghana are visited to select patients with all kinds of orthopedic problems for physical rehabilitation and if necessary for an orthopedic operation.
