Fausta Liundi is a Medical Doctor graduate from Dar es Salaam University in Tanzania in
2010. She works in the Surgical Department of St. Walburg’s Hospital in Nyangao, a town
that is located in the southeast part of Tanzania near border with Mozambique.
She will present:
The hospital was established 55 years ago by Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing
Germany. It is owned by Catholic Diocese of Lindi and acts as Council (District) Hospital.
Since the hospital has qualified surgeon in residence, only one for Lindi and Mtwara Regions
with population over 2 million people many patients with complicated surgical problems are
referred to the hospital.
Hospital is working under really low resource settings with permanent shortage of educated
personnel, doctors and nurses. There is chronic lack of money for drugs and medical
materials and at the same time number of patients is constantly growing.
This situation creates dilemma and forces staff to become innovative and creative in order to
keep costs down and provide uninterrupted medical service on satisfactory level.
Author is presenting several practical innovations, modifications and ideas introduced and
run in Nyangao Hospital.
